As a sequel to the global assessment on adaptation of forests to climate change and the regional analysis of adaptation measures in Sub-Saharan Africa, this study represents the final step of a three-tiered approach to developing adaptation strategies for effective implementation on the ground. The objective of the present study is to identify elements of adaptation strategies in order to define concrete, resilient adaptation measures that can be implemented on the ground in the selected pilot cases. These and the applied methodological approach may serve as guidance and recommendation for the development of similar adaptation projects in Africa. The following localities representing tropical high and transition forests in West Africa, as well as Miombo Woodlands in Eastern and Southern Africa, were selected as sites for the pilot cases:
a) Offinso District in Northwestern Ghana located in the Moist Semi-deciduous (MSD) forest type of the High Forest Zone of Ghana, and today representing a heavily degraded savannah landscape; and
b) Lake Chilwa Catchment in the Southeast of Malawi, bordering Mozambique, representing an agricultural landscape with highly degraded watershed protection forests. |
